Title I, Part A
Title I, Part A- Basic
The purpose of federally funded Title I program is to support local school districts in improving teaching and learning for students in high-poverty schools so these students meet the state’s challenging content and performance standards. Title I is one program under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) formerly the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Title I schools can operate either as targeted assistance or schoolwide. Targeted assistance schools identify students who are at risk of not meeting the state’s content and performance standards and provide individualized instructional programs to the identified students so they may meet the state’s standards. Schoolwide programs use their funds to improve the entire program of the school so that all students are helped.
Title I, Part A-Basic funds generally offer:
- smaller classes or special instructional spaces
- additional teachers and aides
- opportunities for professional development for school staff
- extra time for teaching Title I students the skills they need
- a variety of supplementary teaching methods
- an individualized program for students
- additional teaching materials which supplement their regular instruction
