Important Licensure Information

EXPIRING MISSISSIPPI TEACHING LICENSE
ALL NASD Certified Educators who have an expiring June 30, 2024, Mississippi license should be earning semester hours or obtaining CEUs for license renewal before Spring 2024.
Educators who do not have an updated license on file in Human Resources by April 2024 will not receive a 2024-2025 SY contract until they have renewed the license and submitted it to Human Resources.
MDE does not discuss nor submit educator licenses or information to the Human Resources Office.
Educators must update HR on all license revisions: certification level upgrades, adding endorsements, removing endorsements, etc.
Human Resources does not need copies of educator CEU information.
Human Resources only requires a legible copy of the renewed license.

ONE-YEAR PROVISIONAL LICENSED EDUCATORS  (District Requested License
One-year provisional licensed educators (educators who have a district-requested license) must be enrolled in an accredited program working towards their 3-year or 5-year license.
Provisional licensed educators who are exhibiting progress working toward their own standard license may qualify for a 2nd or 3rd year-requested provisional license until they acquire their license on their own.
The Mississippi Department of Education allows Districts only 3 requests to assist an upcoming educator in receiving a provisional license. The educator must be able to submit supporting documentation that they are progressing towards their 3 or 5-year license.

3-YEAR LICENSED EDUCATORS (ALTERNATE ROUTE)
Educators with an alternate 3-year license must show progress towards their standard 5-year license.

EDUCATORS TEACHING OUT OF AREA
Educators teaching out of area should work towards obtaining the proper endorsement for the assigned courses taught.
Example: If an educator has an 188 Biology Endorsement and is teaching at the Elementary Education level, the educator must obtain the 117 Elementary Education Endorsement to be considered as a highly qualified educator.
Educators teaching out of area, but are not interested in remaining in the out-of-area assignment, may request a transfer to their area of certification for next school year.
If subject area assignments are available, the educator may be considered for a transfer.
PLEASE NOTE:
CONSIDERATION DOES NOT MEAN THE TRANSFER WILL BE HONORED.
THERE MUST BE A POSITION AVAILABLE IN ORDER TO CONSIDER THE TRANSFER.

PERMANENT SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS
Non-Certified Teachers, also known as Permanent Substitute Teachers (Perm Subs are full-time employees paying into PERS Retirement and receiving benefits) must submit work progress towards certification to remain in the Permanent Substitute Teacher Status.
Depending on progress, the Permanent Substitute Teacher can be dismissed from their position when a Highly Qualified, Certified Candidate is available.

PATH TO CERTIFICATION
Provisional Licensed Teachers and Permanent Substitute Teachers must prepare and submit their Path to Certification documentation to their principal by December 15, 2023.
Principals will submit to HR for the upcoming school year staffing process.
