McLaurin Kindergartners are 100 Days Smarter

by Rita Brooks
Kindergarten and first-grade students at McLaurin Elementary School crossed major hurdles celebrating 100 days of school Thursday, January 24.

With Fruit Loops, mini marshmallows and animal crackers, kindergarten students in Mrs. Felicia Mann’s class celebrated by learning to count and write numbers from 1 to 100. Each student brought 100 snack items for the activity. There were Skittles, animal crackers, Fruit Loops, mini pretzels, Gold Fish, marshmallows and Hershey’s Kisses.
Students were given worksheets that helped them practice writing numbers to 100 as well as further their number recognition skills. Once the writing exercise was completed, each student received 100 treats in a cup from Peggy Drake, the classroom paraprofessional. Each student painstaking covered their charts with tasty treats. Once the charts were covered, the students ate the treats.

When asked by Mrs. Mann to give a thumbs up if this was one of their favorite classroom activities, Payton Knibbs said: “This is my best day ever” while other students gave two thumbs up.

Mann said the 100th-day celebration would conclude with photos allowing each student an opportunity to visualize themselves when they reach the age of 100 years old.
